Olga Koch Comes From Money – Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024, Monkey Barrel

Reviewer: Alex Gibson

Olga Koch bursts into Monkey Barrel with a surge of energy, leaping onto chairs and pumping her fists, setting the tone for an evening of non-stop hilarity. And that’s just the warm-up.

In her show Olga Koch Comes From Money, Koch hilariously navigates the perks and pitfalls of a wealthy upbringing. Where did the money come from? Her father. Does it matter? We’ll find out. Should we feel sorry for her? Absolutely not. Is she relatable? Also no, and that’s precisely where the comedy gold lies.

We are taken on a wild ride through her 31 years of life: from being bullied for being too rich, and then not rich enough, yacht holidays, and studying in New York City during the Gossip Girl era. Prince Harry, Winston Churchill, the Clintons, and Obama—no one is safe from her razor-sharp wit.

What truly baffles Koch isn’t the sudden riches her family ‘simply fell’ into from some potentially shady dealings during the Soviet Union, and it’s not the trials and tribulations of the American Dream, but rather the UK’s perplexing class system. Her take on the subject leaves everyone in stitches.

Koch’s delivery is slick throughout the hour; her natural confidence is magnetic, and though the stage might be small, her presence is larger than life.

It’s certainly not a journey of self-discovery. Her take on wealth is fearless, unapologetic, and anything but humble. But we all arrived expecting Koch to be “another little white woman you will love to hate,” and in reality, you can’t help but love her. She’s a force of nature, and she’s solidified her status as a Fringe favourite.
