Is it all a dream? On walks Elmer, the lights dim and the audience lean forward in their seats as this amazing Elmer puppet stomps onto the set. A magical ending that allows one to breathe in the beauty of such a classic tale. It’s certainly not a dream, but for the actors and audience alike it feels like it could be as they’re awaiting Elmer since the beginning. This anticipation enhances the awe and wonder and allows one to appreciate the beautiful puppetry.
The production builds to this awesome moment as the three actors – Frankie Turton, Jack Benjamin and Amelia Gabriel , whom are somewhat tongue in cheek, work together seamlessly to wittingly tell the original story of Elmer amongst others. Wonderfully timed physicality and movement combined with catchy songs by Matthew Floyd Jones allows the audience to follow the plot easily. Tall stories’ notion of play and silliness is proved in the many moments of interaction enjoyed by adults and children alike. Whether that’s becoming a ‘hippo’, singing along, or bouncing a balloon across the theatre.
Set in the jungle, a simple yet eye-catching backdrop complements the “try this at home” storytelling style. The childlike energy of the actors doesn’t dip, in fact it reaches quite a high when we meet the rocking roaring lion beautifully portrayed by Amelia Gabriel. Each actor embodies the characters cleverly using props and quick simple costume changes, like turning a waistcoat inside out, to help distinguish between them. The actors have great chemistry which exudes fun and playfulness. The three-year-old sitting next to me says “They’re so funny.”
This production combines a dreamy set, storytelling and puppetry. It’s 35 years since David Mckee’s Elmer was published; Tall stories celebrates this by bringing the story to stage in this world premiere; a simple and wholesome hour-long production suitable for 3 years and above. If you are of a slightly older age and Elmer is a childhood memory then this is sure to bring you some joy.
