An accessible and fully inclusive adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s The Detective Dog comes to the Stephen Joseph Theatre as part of a UK tour. This vibrant and colourful little offering is beautifully told using British Sign Language, puppetry and music creating a multisensory experience through sight, texture and smells.Tiny Tall Productions bring this popular children’s story to life in the McCarthy Studio in which Nell, the detective dog in question, smells out clues using his ever sniffing nose. Naturally, mischief and calamity ensue leaving the younger audience members engaged and utterly enthralled.
Our three actors, Maia Ayling, Amy Murray and Hannah Tudge, work tirelessly to captivate the young crowd. Through strong physicality and playful facial expression, the trio literally act their socks off. The new songs, written by Jack Drewry, are age-appropriate and nicely pitched. There’s also some lovely stage design work by Kate Sykes and Ruby Brown which perfectly depict the charming illustrations of Sara Ogilvie. Particular kudos must go to Jess Jones for her wonderful puppetry making, The Detective Dog gaining literal gasps from the audience.
