Someone’s Knockin’ at the Door runs as part of the popular A Play, A Pie and A Pint series, this performance as always, is preceded by the choice of a yummy pie or vegan option and the addition of a pint or other beverage. After choosing it’s time to find a seat, settle down to the pre-show treats and wait for the show to start.
Scottish theatre favourites Maureen Carr (Kathy) and Jonathan Watson (Jack), an elderly Glaswegian couple, each tell their granddaughter the tale of the day they went looking for Paul McCartney’s house near Campbeltown during their honeymoon 50 years ago in 1976. Although they are next to each other on the stage and taking turns to speak, they are each telling their own side of the story to their granddaughter, who it seems is doing a project on the past for school. Their own perspectives of the same events are often hilariously different whilst the two sides interlink perfectly. For Jack it was the best day of his life, for Kathy the worst day ever.
Jack demonstrates his knowledge of the Beatles throughout, with a very occasional snippet of one of their songs. It’s a play of nostalgia for music and a different lifestyle “back in the day”.
The set is simple, yet effective, with deck chairs switching between a campsite and the seats in their van. The lighting changes effectively according to the mood of the moment, or to signify a change in the action.
As someone born the year the couple were on honeymoon and chasing the dream of meeting Jack’s idol, there is much to enjoy. The early start and finish of the play allow for a wider audience demographic, along with the appealing content. It’s a thoroughly good night out, well worth the ticket price.
