PREVIEW: The House of Life (and Friends)

By Chris Lilly

With glitterballs flashing, cymbals crashing, and The RaveRend in full-throated funk-soul host mode, it’s going to be a good night. Tonight the RaveRend and his mate Trev are hosting a bill of comedy, song, and strangeness, genially introduced by a glamorous bald man with a beard full of sparkles and a big bluesy voice. The near-priestly vestments he adopts give an extra burst of bling, and he welcomes everyone with a geniality that feels genuine.

It’s a friendly show. Lots of folk in the audience are coming back for a second or third shot of the House of Life, so it lives up to the variety in its variety label. Stand-ups, a good band with Trev laying down some mean bass lines, and a memorably bizarre intervention from Figs in Wigs make up the bill, though the main attraction is the RaveRend himself, Ben Welch. The variety stacks up to a sort of mantra – let your troubles wash away on a sea of funk and fun. Music, variety, and good vibes. It’s a compelling recipe for an excellent evening.
