New Musical Weird gets world premiere at Newcastle Theatre Royal

Weird, a new pop-powered musical reimagining Shakespeare’s Macbeth, will premiere at Newcastle Theatre Royal from January 28-31, 2026. Written by Nick Butcher, Kerri Watt, and Fraser Watt, the show blends witchcraft and pop anthems to tell the story through the eyes of three witches.

Award-winning songwriters and chart-topping artists, the creators have over 20 million streams and notable achievements in music, theatre, and film. Nick Butcher is known for the West End hit The Little Big Things, Kerri Watt has performed at major venues like Glastonbury, and Fraser Watt has collaborated with stars like Dolly Parton.

Producer Michael Harrison and Newcastle Theatre Royal will offer free tickets to over 5,000 schoolchildren for the first five weekday performances, aiming to make theatre accessible and inspiring for young audiences.

Michael Harrison, a leading theatre producer, has a history of successful West End musicals and is the Chief Executive of Crossroads Pantomimes. Marianne Locatori, Chief Executive of Newcastle Theatre Royal, expressed excitement about the collaboration and its potential to engage and inspire local youth.
