This is a production like no other. Taking Norse mythology and combining it with professional wrestling seems like a unique recipe for chaos. Instead, this production is able to blend the two elements perfectly together. This production follows the myth surrounding Ragnarök, where Odin and Loki work together to create a new world.
The first half largely revolves around the two defeating those who stand in their way, and it is filled more with laughter, though there are still amazing fight scenes. These scenes get the audience involved as the action moves from the stage into the stalls. The second act darkens the tone as now that Odin (Howard Drake) and his children are in power, it corrupts them. Loki (Ed Gamester) loses a loved one and helps to create Ragnarök. This leads to a major, all-out wrestling match. The grand finale is a spectacle match where all of the actors wrestle it out. The moves are stunning and will lead to the audience cheering and booing.
One of the reasons why this production works is because it is exactly what it advertises itself to be, and the performers take their roles seriously. By doing this, the drama surrounding the Norse Gods, and there is a lot, is easily heightened by the actors’ interactions with each other and with the audience. Each time a new character is introduced, the music and lights are used to parallel a wrestler entering the ring. Exits as well can be grand affairs where the audience screams in anticipation for what is going to occur next.
One of the best aspects of this production is the audience participation. The audience cheers, boos and roots for different characters. This leads to a communal feeling of camaraderie. There is the perfect mix of fun dialogue and wrestling that keeps the audience on their toes, wondering what will happen next. Along with witty dialogue and mind-blowing wrestling moves, there is also a well-performed sword-fighting scene.
This production does a great job at highlighting how wrestling is a performance act, no different than what can be found on the West End or Broadway. With the bright lights, loud music, and amazing moves, this is a night at the theatre no one will forget anytime soon.
