The iconic Epstein Theatre, a beloved cultural landmark in Liverpool, is set to reopen its doors later this year after a two-year closure. The theatre, which has been a staple of the city’s arts scene for over a century, was forced to shut down in June 2023 due to financial difficulties following the withdrawal of funding support from Liverpool City Council.
In a recent announcement on social media, Anthony Proctor-Williams, the returning General Manager and Theatre Director, expressed his excitement about the reopening. “The cat is out of the bag. I am delighted to share that I have returned to the Epstein Theatre as General Manager and Theatre Director. I’m going to need all of your help in bringing this beautiful place back to life. It’s so exciting,” he said.
The theatre, located on Hanover Street, will undergo significant refurbishments, including new lighting, stage cloths, sound equipment, and upgraded backstage areas. The front-of-house bar will also be refitted, promising a refreshed experience for both performers and audiences.
Councillor Harry Doyle, Liverpool Council’s cabinet member for Culture, welcomed the news, stating, “Really exciting news for the city as the Epstein Theatre announces its re-opening. It was lovely to meet last week with returning theatre manager, Anthony Proctor-Williams. He’s so passionate about the Epstein. Looking forward to working with him to help promote this cultural asset.”
The Epstein Theatre, which has hosted thousands of productions under various names over its 110-year history, is expected to once again become a vibrant hub for Liverpool’s artistic community. More details about the reopening and upcoming events will be shared in the coming months.
