Co-creators: Ramesh Meyyappan and George Mann
Director: George Mann
Ad Infinitum maintains a reputation for producing visually impressive, deeply moving work and its newest production, Last Rites, is no exception. Creative duo George Mann and Ramesh Meyyappan, the latter of whom is the sole performer of the piece, have made theatre magic with their intimate exploration of grief, which continues Ad Infinitum’s ethos of staging accessible work spotlighting those marginalised by society.
Co-commissioned by Derby Theatre and MimeLondon, the play unpacks the emotional journey of a man confronted with the death of his father. Hindu tradition would have the eldest son perform all of the final rites leading up to cremation, yet this doesn’t quite fit the protagonist’s complex relationship with both the deceased and his faith.
What unfolds is an affecting narrative, showcasing the complexities of growing up deaf, the pain of missed connection, and the joy of embracing one’s identity. As the protagonist also keeps his own son at bay during the ritual, the intergenerational effect of trauma and learned behaviours also comes into clearer focus.
Whether bounding energetically across the stage or bearing the heavy weight of stillness, performer Meyyappan consistently has the audience transfixed. His character work is second to none, shifting roles with incredible nuance, and his intricate storytelling throughout, fluid yet precise, allow for seamless clarity. Of course, some narrative support is provided by phrases projected onto the back wall, but so much of the visible emotional turmoil transcends language, and Meyyappan’s presentation is achingly beautiful.
Chris Harrisson’s exquisite video and projection design is a work of art in its own right; so many of the visual sequences could mesmerise as a standalone exhibition. From grandiose animation sequences right down to changes in font, every frame is carefully chosen to amplify Meyyappan’s thoughts and the emotional flow of the narrative. Also impactful is Akintayo Akinbode’s bass-laden sound design which underscores the visual spectacle and, as the deep vibrations fill the space, makes for a magnificent multi-sensory experience.
Last Rites is a triumph. A gorgeous display of humanity which cyclically warms and breaks your heart, this production is as real, raw and beautiful as it gets.
