Fisherman Jon: What’s On The End Of My Rod? – The Puppet Theatre Barge, London

Reviewer: Serafina Cusack

Writers: Coral Bevan, Ricky Hunt and David Alwyn

Directors: Ricky Hunt and David Alwyn

In the maritime ambience of The Puppet Theatre Barge, Fisherman Jon: What’s On The End Of My Rod? casts a mesmerizing spell, blending elements of drag, comedy, and theatre into a captivating narrative that tugs at the heartstrings. Coral Bevan’s creation, brought to life under the skilful direction of Ricky Hunt and David Alwyn, takes the audience on a whimsical voyage of self-discovery and love.

On a gently bobbing fishing boat, we are introduced to the slimy yet endearing protagonist, Fisherman Jon, a lovable fool sailing the seas in search of his next catch. After a good polish of his rod, he reels in a carp that will change his life forever. As the narrative unfolds, Coral Bevan’s exceptional physicality takes centre stage, commanding the audience’s attention with a mesmerizing display of agility and grace. Each movement is executed with precision, seamlessly transitioning between characters. The seemingly absurd world of Fisherman Jon becomes a tangible reality, thanks to Bevan’s expressive portrayal.

This control is exhibited further in the extended sections of audience member participation. Potentially a recipe for disaster as pivotal elements of the plot involve a potentially unwilling participant, Bevan manufactures interactions to prepare for all types of stage-mates in what ends up being some of the most hilarious moments of the show. It is a testament to the creation of the show (Bevan, Ricky Hunt, David Alwyn) that the themes of isolation and loneliness are still so palpable in a performance that asks such jovial involvement of the audience.

There are a couple of moments when the production stumbles. The incorporation of clunky props feels out of place amidst Bevan’s impeccable characterization. The props often distract from the overall experience in a production driven by the power of physical expression, the reliance on unnecessary objects proves to be a minor but noticeable flaw.

Fisherman Jon: What’s On The End Of My Rod? is a delightful theatrical experience that marries comedy and heartfelt sincerity that surprises with its genuine heartfelt moments. Beneath the layers of laughter and theatrics lies a touching exploration of self-love.
