Live Foley & Music: Jonny Venvell
Set in 1973, REDACTED follows Marnie Makowski into New Mexico as she searches for her missing sister. What begins as a missing person case quickly explodes into a multi-layered, millennium-spanning conspiracy. A butcher, a pilot, and a priest each hold fragments of the puzzle. What follows is a wildly entertaining odyssey through America’s most absurd manhunt.
The physicality of Voloz Collective’s performers is nothing short of astonishing. Through body language alone, the ensemble establishes setting, mood, character, and plot with precision. They transition seamlessly between playing eccentric characters, items of furniture, and set pieces. At times, the production feels like watching a live-action film unfold on stage.
The actors’ infectious adrenaline keeps the audience hooked throughout. They scale mountains, swim underwater to break through ice, and ski at breakneck speeds to escape antagonists. The physical comedy and acrobatic storytelling flow with effortless cohesion.
The visual action is brilliantly complemented by live sound. Foley musician Jonny Venvell, supported by vocal effects from the cast, creates a rich, immersive landscape. In an inventive twist, live “beeps” censor key information on stage, keeping both the characters and the audience guessing.
REDACTED is a masterclass in physical theatre and inventive storytelling. Packed with high-octane energy, sharp comedy, and masterful performances, it is a triumph that demands to be seen.
