Concept and Direction: Wayne McGregor
Choreography: Wayne McGregor, in collaboration with the dancers
Original Music: Jlin
Known for his rigorous, choreographic style, Wayne McGregor is also known for pushing the boundaries of movement, by incorporating elements from cognitive science, virtual reality, and AI to create dance works.
This production of Autobiography, by the touring Company Wayne McGregor (V102 & V103), certainly pushes boundaries, exploring the idea of the ‘body as archive’, through a series of unique dance segments inspired and determined by the sequencing of McGregor’s own genetic code. This code is combined with AI and choreography to create a work that remakes itself with each performance.
This is an intriguing concept. The performance draws inspiration from the 23 pairs of chromosomes that define the human genome, with 23 distinct movement segments, each one representing a significant moment from McGregor’s life. The AI component is the algorithm that determines which segments will be performed and in what order, each random segment number lighting up a small screen above the stage. The first and last segment are fixed, but the rest of the performance changes according to the algorithm, giving each show a unique structure, much like genetic sequencing itself.
It’s easy to get a little lost in this concept, but the performance itself is so compelling, it really doesn’t matter if you miss this detail entirely.
The minimalist staging and sombre lighting set a tone that is both futuristic and intense, shifting between dark and contemplative to bright and energetic. The original score, by contemporary composer Jlin, weaves the emotional treads seamlessly from piece to piece, aided by rich lighting design.
McGregor’s fusion of athleticism and precision is fully embraced by his troupe of nine incredibly talented dancers. Each one deftly shifts between the differencing physical an emotional states of each piece, moving as a perfectly balanced ensemble, executing complex choreography with precision.
As a collective they were breathtaking to watch, and knowing that they are responding to the random sequencing of the algorithm makes them all the more impressive. Their combination of technical skill, emotional depth, and physical strength was extraordinary, and they clearly connected with the audience, as showed in the standing ovation they received.
This fearless experimentation, combined with the ensembles commitment to both technical precision and emotional resonance, makes this show a must see.
