Mikron Theatre Company, the nation’s most prolific touring theatre company, has announced the world premiere of its 2026 production, Top of the Wold: Tales from a Mobile Library.
This laugh-out-loud quest through a patchwork of culture and community marks a monumental year for Mikron as they celebrate their 54th year of touring and the 90th birthday of their beloved vintage narrowboat, Tyseley. The production will tour nationally by canal, river, and road until Oct 24th.
Mikron is known for telling untold stories and this rich production crafted by Maeve Larkin observes the voices of a unique county and it’s people. It celebrates the importance of mobile libraries as sanctuaries, beacons of hope, public services that connect people and communities in a digital age where human connection is more important than ever. These tales from a Mobile Library, developed in partnership with the East Riding Mobile Library Service, Top of the Wold invites audiences to hop aboard the charmingly quirky mobile library for a hilarious and heartwarming journey. Bursting with original songs, this brand-new play dives into chapters teeming with the lives of then and now, proving that if the story of a county is written in a book, the library is the spine that shows you where to look.
Top of Wold is written by Maeve Larkin with music by Robert Cooper. The creative team also includes Director Marianne McNamara and Set and Costume Designer Celia Perkins. Sonum Batra is the Musical Director and provides musical arrangements. The show will be performed by a cast of four actor-musicians: James McLean, Georgina Liley, Robert Took and Catherine Warnock.
As Mikron enters its 54th year, the company remains dedicated to bringing professional theatre to unconventional spaces, performing at over 130 different venues annually from allotments and fish and chip shops to pubs, village greens and even the odd theatre. In keeping with their commitment to inclusivity, every performance of Top of the Wold includes integrated audio description.
The production opens at Pocklington Arts Centre on 27th March 2026, before touring nationally under 24th October 2026.
