Following its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse in 2024 and a sell-out run at the Young Vic, as well as successful runs in the West End and on Broadway, Punch returns to the UK. James Graham’s play, a true story of hope, humanity and the possibility of change, will return to Nottingham Playhouse before touring to Leeds Playhouse and Theatre Royal Plymouth.
Jacob Dunne, a teenager from The Meadows, Nottingham, spends his Saturday nights seeking thrills with his friends. One fateful evening in Old Market Square, an impulsive punch leads to fatal consequences. After serving prison time, Jacob finds himself lost and directionless. Searching for answers, Joan and David – the parents of his victim James – ask to meet, sparking a profound transformation in Jacob’s life.
The cast for the return of the hit play includes: Elan Butler as Raf and Sam; Matthew Flynn as David, the father of James Hodgkinson; Olivier-nominated Grace Hodgett Young as Clare and Nicola; Jack James Ryan as Jacob; Laura Tebbutt as Jacob’s mum and Wendy; and Finty Williams as James’ mother, Joan.
Punch is based on the book Right from Wrong by Jacob Dunne, a true-life account of the power of forgiveness. It has sparked discussions from courthouses to the House of Commons on the topic of Restorative Justice during its original run.
The original creative team return and includes: Director Adam Penford; Production Designer Anna Fleischle; Lighting Designer Robbie Butler; Sound Designer and Composer Alexandra Faye Braithwaite; Movement Director Leanne Pinder; and Casting Director Christopher Worrall CDG.
Punch is dedicated to James Hodgkinson and all victims of one-punch.
The production will run at Nottingham Playhouse from 13th March until 4th April, Leeds Playhouse from 7th to 11th April and Theatre Royal Plymouth from 14th to 18th April, with tickets on sale at all three venues.
