Carpet Muncher – The Pearse Centre, Dublin Fringe Festival 2024

Reviewer: Helena Clarke

Creator: Jo Morrigan Black

This spoken word performance is a perfect example of what every spoken word show should be. The words are beautiful, heart wrenchingly relatable and hilariously funny all rolled into one perfect performance. From the moment Jo Morrigan Black appears on stage in a terrific Mothman costume, you know you are going to be entertained.

Carpet Muncher combines spoken word poetry, physical theatre and drag that celebrates queer resistance to taxonomy. It is a show that every audience member will connect with and relate to in some way as it is a celebration of the unknown.

Carpet Muncher is a collection of experiences gathered together and performed with the most incredible array of costumes that perfectly fit each section of the show. The tantalising clothes rack filled with an eclectic array of costumes spikes curiosity and an eagerness to find out what will come next. It is an ingenious way of keeping the narrative of the different pieces knitted together.

The language used in this performance draws you in and makes you laugh before its poetic beauty draws tears from your eyes. In one moment we all laugh at a joke about a tiny man; Bruce Willis, the next we are all feeling the pain of “spitting our emotions into the sink” in reference to an unsteady relationship.

The use of stage lighting enhances each scene and adds to the dramatic changes on stage. It created the effect of a science fiction setting with an alien spaceship landing, or in another scenario a simple bathroom scene.

It would be wonderful to see this performance on a bigger stage as throughout the show the only flaw came from a fear of making any sudden movements that would create a noise that may potentially disrupt or disturb the show. A five star spoken word show that everyone should see.

Ran Until 12th September 2024.
