Grisly ghoulish tales galore in this informative fun Brighton tour. If you are looking for the dark ethereal history of Brighton Lanes, then this is the tour for you. For the visitor and veteran Brightonian alike, this guided walk is enjoyably packed with stories of sightings from the spirit world. The way the history of Brighton’s
streets, buildings and people is weaved into tales of the supernatural is inspired.
With a guide that looks the part in a fabulous Victorian costume -complete with cape, bell and bag of tricks – you will roam the streets seeking out stories of spectres. The eccentricity of the guide, his outfit and regularly tolling bell, all add to the atmosphere as the group moves between location, soaking in the vibrations. Some of the props may be a little rough around the edges, like beloved Freddie – a threadbare meowing cat – but they
all add to the fun aesthetic.
Your tour guide, Silas, tells tales of spectral activity in eight locations throughout the Brighton Lanes making this a generally undemanding walking route. Many of the tales are fascinating but unfortunately a few sex pest ghosts have made it into the repertoire. In contrast, one of the most memorable tales is the walling up of a nun who tried to elope. This is a genuinely heartbreaking and also horrifying piece of history well regaled.
The way the tale is told and then time taken to prepare the group for moving passed the wall is thoughtfully considered. It is enough to give members of the party chills.
A couple of the references to gender and sexuality in this tour could use updating but otherwise this is a fun romp through the grisly ghost stories of Brighton Lanes. Take this tour to learn more
about a fascinating part of the city and to gain an insight into the dark tales of Brighton’s spectral underbelly.
This is an engaging walking tour packed with stories of sightings from the spirit
world. Just don’t be surprised if it gives you nightmares.
