Leeds Playhouse has today announced the appointment of Tom Wright as its new artistic director. Wright, who is currently the associate artistic director at London’s Kiln Theatre, will take up his new role in June 2025. He will be joining Shawab Iqbal, who has been promoted to chief executive, to form the executive leadership team of the organization.
Wright brings a wealth of experience to Leeds Playhouse, having previously worked on notable productions such as “My Dad’s Gap Year,” “Undetectable,” and “Very Special Guest Star.” He has also been instrumental in developing and delivering the artistic program at the Kiln Theatre, working closely with artistic directors Indhu Rubasingham and Amit Sharma.

Iqbal added, “Tom’s appointment as the new artistic director of Leeds Playhouse is hugely energising. He has an impressive track record of developing dynamic work with some of today’s most exciting artists, with genuine inclusion always underpinning his practice. This, along with his nuanced understanding of regional theatre, will allow him to build on the longstanding values of the Playhouse as it enters its 55th year.”
Wright will succeed James Brining, who leaves the organization after 13 years of dedicated service. The Leeds Playhouse community eagerly anticipates the fresh vision and dynamic leadership that Wright will bring to the theatre.
