Titanique – Criterion Theatre, London

Reviewer: Emily Davison

Writers: Marla Mindelle, Constantine Rousouli and Tye Blue

Director: Tye Blue

Titanique at Criterion Theatre puts a hilarious twist on the iconic Titanic story, following the love affair of Jack and Rose from the perspective of a very biased, boozy Celine Dion. If you’re a fan of the classic film Titanic and love all things campy, over-the-top, and laugh-out-loud funny, this musical parody is an absolute must-see.

The entire narrative unfolds through Celine’s eyes, which is far from historically accurate—thankfully. The show takes creative liberties, remixing the original story into a wild, comedic ride. One of the standout moments is Lauren Drew’s sensational portrayal of Celine Dion. She completely nails Celine’s voice and physicality, delivering iconic quotes and references that will have fans of the singer laughing and applauding. It’s a brilliant mix of a loving tribute and a playful, exaggerated take on the legendary diva.

Co-authors Marla Mindelle, Constantine Rousouli, and Tye Blue throw in clever references to other musicals and shows, keeping things fresh and engaging. The humour is cheeky and, at times, a bit raunchy—perfectly in line with the show’s playful spirit. It never feels mean-spirited, just a little frisky (in the best possible way).

Costume Designer, Alejo Vietti, produces a minimalist yet effective approach to costumes. There are no elaborate costume changes, but the simple style works perfectly, letting the performances and comedy take centre stage. The actors clearly have a blast, and their multi-role performances add to the chaotic fun. There are also moments where they break character or reveal behind-the-scenes glimpses, adding to the playful, immersive atmosphere.

The cast is incredibly talented, with standout performances from Charlotte Wakefield (as Molly) and her powerhouse vocals in the classic All by Myself. Layton Williams steals the show as Tina Turner, with a cheeky, RuPaul’s Drag Race-inspired segment that has the audience roaring with laughter.

Audience interaction is another fantastic element. This isn’t just a show you watch—it’s one you get to be part of. The improv moments and direct engagement with the crowd create a relaxed vibe, allowing everyone to feel like they’re in on the joke.

While some jokes occasionally may feel stretched, the show’s fast-paced energy and clever timing keep things moving smoothly. Titanique knows how to keep things lively without overstaying its welcome. If you’re in the mood for something silly, absurd, and utterly hilarious, this is the perfect pick for a night of irreverent fun and incredible musical performances.
