Writer and Director: Camille Dawson
Taking place inside everyone’s favourite VAULT venue, a tiny shipping container The Void, The War Inside is an “immersive” experience within a womb-like cavern, hearing the story of how Marnie’s body fought a war inside itself. Now, the immersiveness of this experience may only extend to some pink cloth and a sleep mask, but this work-in-progress story is wholly gripping, funny, and beautifully produced.
Just before the best summer of her life, Marnie’s discovers blood in her poo. Cue a Fantastic Voyage inside the body as we meet the vital organs and blood cells involved in the attack and solution, learning both about how the body’s immune response systems work whilst interrogating the concepts of need, aliens, death, God, and also a Trump metaphor. And all in half an hour!
Writer Camille Dawson has crafted an excellent little sonic play, filled with jokes related both to white blood cell Ross’s desire to be valued but also the pernickety, political way in which organs relate to each other. Backed up with excellent voice performances from Dawson, Sophie LK Winter and Nathan Queeley-Dennis, as well as exquisitely immersive sound design from Paul Freeman, it’s an informative and exciting half-hour with a meaningful ending.
One note: the flashing from the silent disco headphones every time a noise is heard is incredibly off-putting. If attending, wear the facemask.
