Writer: Kevin Fearon
Director: Mark Chatterton
The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come may appear on the stage of Liverpool’s Royal Court, but this production is far from a humbug. It is a lively and spirited seasonal treat that delivers laughter in abundance and showcases some of the finest performances seen at the venue in recent years.
Executive Producer Kevin Fearon once again takes up the pen to give Dickens’ classic tale a distinctly scouse flavour. The familiar hallmarks of the original remain, yet the addition of a love interest brings a heartfelt layer of sentimentality that makes Scrooge’s despair feel even more authentic.
In the lead role, Paul Duckworth offers a brilliantly sardonic and comical interpretation of Scrooge. He revels in the sharp humour and fills the stage with exuberance. Lindzi Germain is, as ever, larger than life as Barbera Marley, a widow with a secret, and she captivates the audience with a show-stopping performance of Adele’s Someone Like You. Keddy Sutton is in excellent form, and the return of Mayor Joe is a delight, leaving many to wonder why a full show dedicated to him has not yet been staged. Lenny Wood and Helen Carter shine as the Scratchitt’s, while Adam McCoy brings warmth and a touch of foolish charm to Freddie.
Ellie Light’s ingenious revolving set complements Mark Chatterton’s slick and energetic direction. Although the first act occasionally drifts, the second act is sharper, funnier and more engaging. This production stands as one of the strongest Christmas shows since Scouse Nativity, and the collaboration between Fearon and Chatterton continues to grow in strength each year.
Runs until January 24th January 2026
