Composer: Leoš Janáček
Director: Sophie Motley
The Cunning Little Vixen is a 1923 Czech opera by Leoš Janáček. Originally inspired by a serialised illustrated novella by Rudolf Těsnohlídek, this production by the Irish National Opera invokes this original inspiration throughout. The Cunning Little Vixen is the tale of Sharp Ears, an anthropomorphic fox, her capture by the Forester, her escape and discovery of freedom, love and partnership.
Těsnohlídek’s work’s influence is seen most clearly in the projection design by Neil O’Driscoll. The on screen projections are reminiscent of the simple line illustrations that accompanied Těsnohlídek’s work. Although very beautiful, the transition projections run for an exceptionally long period of time at points. While it allows a chance to enjoy Janáček’s vibrant score, it also drags a little. It is also seen in the simple, line drawing-esque set design by Maree Kearns. The set contains a number of sliding panels that are cleverly moved throughout. Wonderfully atmospheric lighting by Sarah Jane Shiels adds tension and exhilaration. Costume design by Saileóg O’Halloran is fun and vibrant. The woodland animals are full of bright colours while the humans are dressed in much more muted colours creating a wonderful juxtaposition between the two worlds.
A pared down Irish National Opera Orchestra is touring with this production. Expertly conducted by Charlotte Corderoy, they deftly perform Janáček’s energetic score. The choreography by Emily Terndrup is whimsical and wonderful. Humans evoking the characteristics of animals can risk looking ridiculous. The choreography here is cleverly crafted to ensure it never quite reaches the level of ridiculous, however, it does come close at points.
An exceptionally talented cast brings these characters, both animal and human, to life. The stand out performance comes from baritone Benjamin Russell as the Forester. His voice is rich and smooth, as well as incredibly pleasing to the ear, as he navigates the complex emotional range of the Forester. Sopranos Amber Norelai and Jade Phoenix give stunning performances as Sharp Ears and her Fox partner, Goldspur. The ensemble includes a plethora of young, upcoming talent.
The Cunning Little Vixen is a tale of the life cycle and the interplay between humans and animals.
Running Until 22nd February 2026.
