The Christmas Thing – Seven Dials Playhouse, London

Reviewers: Mike Wells

Writers and Directors: Tom Clarkson and Owen Visser

A homage to the Christmas TV specials of the 1990s and early 2000s, The Christmas Thing is a TFI Friday-esque chaotic comedy as technically brilliant as it is uproariously funny. From the moment you enter the auditorium, the production value is unmistakable, with a set that perfectly encapsulates the irreverent style of the show. As the performance unfolds, it quickly becomes clear that this isn’t just an aesthetic triumph—the technical elements are equally impressive, with cleverly designed set pieces adding layers of ingenuity to the chaos.

The show is a multimedia extravaganza featuring slickly produced VTs, clever lighting effects, and deliciously choreographed camera work. Yet, at its core, The Christmas Thing thrives on its interaction with the audience. Nearly every other scene draws members of the audience into the action, a risky choice that is executed flawlessly thanks to the infectious energy and razor-sharp wit of its host, Tom Clarkson. His command of the room, brimming with quick-fire repartee and running gags, ensures that no interaction ever feels forced or awkward.

Clarkson is joined by Owen Visser, who initially appears to be the tech wizard behind the show’s multimedia brilliance but proves to be much more than just a sidekick. With a knack for physical comedy and perfectly timed interjections, Visser contributes plenty of laugh-out-loud moments to the performance. Together, the duo’s chemistry fuels the show’s anarchic spirit.

The loose through-line of Krampus threatening the spirit of Christmas provides a narrative framework, but it’s almost secondary to the riotous fun of the improvised moments and absurd set pieces. Sublimely silly and wildly inventive, The Christmas Thing is a must-see Christmas show with a difference. For pure festive entertainment, you won’t find better in a fringe venue this Christmas.
