Tara Theatre Unveils Natasha Kathi-Chandra’s Inaugural Season

Tara Theatre, renowned for championing South Asian artists since 1977, proudly announces the inaugural season of its new Artistic Director, Natasha Kathi-Chandra. This season promises to weave together the diverse threads of South Asian identities, highlighting stories full of joy, contradictions, and complexities.

Kathi-Chandra’s debut season will kick off with Nicole Latchana’s A Practical Guide on How to Save the World When No One F*ing Else Is**, presented by the Tara Theatre Young Company and directed by Gavin Joseph. Running from April 15 to 19, this biting satire explores Western apathy towards the climate crisis as young activists seek reparations for those affected in the Global South.

Following this, Hunia Chawla’s Permission will be staged from May 30 to June 7. Directed by Neetu Singh, the play delves into the political and sexual autonomy of Muslim women through the friendship of two Pakistani friends, Hanna and Minza.

In November, audiences can look forward to I Dream of Theresa May by Vivek Nityananda, directed by Kathi-Chandra herself. This play, running from November 17 to 29, explores the mentorship between Nikhil, a gay Indian man, and former UK Prime Minister Theresa May as he seeks the right to remain in the UK.

Rounding off the season is Sweetmeats by Karim Khan, presented in co-production with the Bush Theatre. This piece, exploring forbidden love between two South Asian elders, Liaquat and Hema, will have its full details announced for the 2026 run.

Kathi-Chandra commented, “With my inaugural season at Tara Theatre, I want to highlight that there isn’t just one way to ‘be’ South Asian. So often our identities are homogenised, but with these shows, I want audiences to see the sometimes contradictory, often joyful, and nearly always complex ways in which our stories are forged.”
