Writer: Matthias Moret
Matthias Moret brings his internationally acclaimed production Spit In My Face back to London as part of the current Camden Fringe festival. Dark, sexy and intriguing; Moret’s piece is the theatrical equivalent of your fantasy hook-up.
The piece begins with Pierre (Moret) rushing into the space to apologise for fumbling the start of the play. His scene partner (and life partner) Adam is running late, but the show must go on. Pierre proceeds to examine society’s infatuation with monogamy and presents the joys, frustrations, excitement and sorrows of his open relationship with Adam.
Moret is incredibly charismatic and the audience hangs off every word he says. He immediately establishes an intimate rapport with the room, referencing how the piece ‘would’ be staged if Adam was there and guiding viewers through the show in a highly natural, conversational way. There are unfortunately a few moments where his aside comments are too mumbled to understand, though this ultimately plays into the idea that Moret isn’t trying to ‘perform’ for the audience. As he regularly enforces, this is not a solo show.
As both writer and performer, Moret offers a nuanced portrayal of someone who is self-aware of his own sex appeal without coming across as arrogant. He is direct and honest – necessary traits for someone navigating polyamory – and whilst his vanity is occasionally played for laughs, it never feels gratuitous or boastful.
The piece is incredibly well-crafted, with every element of the production intelligently conceived and artfully executed. Even Moret’s consideration of props is inspired, enlisting carefully picked items in unexpected and entertaining ways. Slick lighting and sound designs also complement the piece, with a montage of hook-up app culture being a highlight of the show.
Moret has a unique creative vision and presents a completely captivating theatrical experience. Spit In My Face is the kind of show you immediately want to re-watch in order to fascinate over every breadcrumb of detail.
