Séayoncé’s Perky Nativititties – The Yard, London

Reviewer: Monica Cox

Creators: Dan Wye and Robyn Herfellow

Stepping into the world of Séayoncé’s Perky Nativititties is embracing a festive season with a subversive twist. Greeted by a gloriously camp, Christmassy set and framed by ‘Satan Studios’ cameras, the audience is cast as the live studio audience for a risqué anti-Christmas TV special. Séayoncé, the ghost whisperer with a flair for the dramatic, finds themselves battling an ominous curse that attempts to sanitise and turn their unapologetically irreverent cabaret act into a family-friendly show. Alongside their jazzy pianist sidekick Leslie-Ann, Séayoncé fights back with scandalous parodies of classic Christmas carols and jingles, complete with filthy lyrics and outrageous scenarios.

Highlights of the night include a reimagining of queer Jesus reminiscing about his love for Judas and a villainous Santa with scandalous behaviour. These moments push the boundaries with their biting satire and cater for those with very dark humour.

The show’s structure cleverly switches between on-air chaos and behind-the-scenes antics, delivering a dynamic pace where each twist is perfectly timed. However, the true skill of the text lies in how every word and every line is razor-sharp with witty puns. The comedy lands so fast and furious that you’ll often find yourself scrambling to catch up with your laughter. The filthy jokes cater for those with the dirtiest of minds, and the subversion of the lyrics in the parodies brims with humour. The cleverly embedded audience participation, framed as reactions for the ‘live broadcast’, is seamless, making the audience an integral part of the fun. Séayoncé’s effortless rapport and charm eases the audience into any participation moments.

Leslie-Ann’s accompaniment on the piano underscores the comedic beats, adding a jazzy flair to the performance. Far from being a mere sidekick, Leslie-Ann is integral to the narrative, with their own vengeful subplot with their nemesis, Santa Claus. Oli Fuller’s set design is a treasure trove of festive Easter eggs, adding depth to the world of Satan Studios. Costume design further enhances the show’s camp aesthetic, with Leslie-Ann channelling Rocky Horror vibes and Séayoncé sporting a flowing, mystical kaftan.

The show ends with an often-overlooked reflection on the exclusionary nature of certain Christmas traditions. Séayoncé reminds us why the season can alienate the marginalised and celebrates the solace found in chosen families.

For those seeking an antidote to saccharine pantomimes, Séayoncé’s Perky Nativititties is a perfect choice. Debauched, raunchy, and irresistibly camp, it’s a raucous festive treat that embraces the Grinch in all of us.
