Run to the Nuns: The Musical – Riverside Studios, London

Reviewer: Andrew Houghton

Writer: Jenette Meehan

Composer: Rosa Lucaks

Director: Sophia Hail

Run to the Nuns receives its London debut as part of Bitesize Festival at Riverside Studios, following a successful Brighton Fringe run earlier this year. Advertised with the phrase ‘Booze, Bibles & Bisexuals’, this new musical delivers all the queer fun you expect.

The wacky piece takes place in a nunnery by the sea, repurposed over time into a sexual health clinic and retreat for its residents to escape a male-dominated society. Run by mother bear Doc (Estelle Homerstone) and the eccentric Sage (Cat Thomas), the facility appears to be a little slice of paradise – bar some day-to-day operational hiccups. However, unexpected news is just on the horizon which will throw their safe haven into chaos.

The cast does a good job of world-building, despite a minimal stage space occupied primarily by the musicians who accompany throughout. With just a handful of props, great comic timing and impressive vocal talent, the company fully immerse the audience into the unfolding narrative littered with entertaining musical numbers. Due to imperfect sound leveling and technical hiccups, which are understandable from a production still in development, the solo numbers are perhaps preferable in terms of clarity and execution. However, the skilful harmonies of the group numbers shine through regardless of audio quality.

This production really succeeds in creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere, similar to the fictional nunnery it takes place within. There is a lovely sense of camaraderie between the performers, all of whom are distinct in their characterful roles. It can be rare in an oversaturated world of media to encounter a romantic subplot which you genuinely care for, yet Eve Pereira (Orlagh) and Dani Croston (Kat) thrive opposite each other. Jenette Meehan’s script sweetly lays the groundwork for their relationship, which the pair then elevate with their endearing chemistry.

Run to the Nuns is a highly enjoyable new musical which deserves all of the time, resources and development opportunities the industry can afford. As an unashamedly queer celebration of community and safe spaces, every ticket is money well spent.
