Raul Kohli: Raul Britannia – Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024, Just the Tonic

Reviewer: Alex Gibson

Raul Kohli takes the stage with a lively presence, ready to share a mix of comedy and thoughtful observations on British identity. In his show, Raul Britannia, he combines personal stories with sharp insights to examine what it means to be British in a multicultural society.

Kohli makes it clear from the beginning that this is not a show for interruptions but rather an exploration of his upbringing in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Balancing his Indian heritage with his British environment, Kohli recounts stories from his childhood, including a memorable encounter with a bus driver and the surprising intervention of an elderly woman. These experiences offer an unexpected perspective on British identity.

His storytelling forms the core of his performance. He shares his experiences as the child of immigrant parents and adopted grandparents, adding depth to his reflections on identity and belonging. His adopted British grandfather, who takes him to his first Newcastle United game, represents Kohli’s search for acceptance as British. “Where you from?” becomes a theme that holds us as an audience and hearing “never forget you’re a Geordie” makes the whole room swell with pride for him. This connection provides a sense of community, even as he navigates the challenges of fitting in while embracing his roots.

Throughout the show, Kohli addresses sensitive topics such as the current UK riots with humour and insight, encouraging both laughter and thought. He recounts experiences of prejudice and kindness, using comedy to highlight the variety and richness of British culture. His observations on everything from pub life to the Royal Family remind us of our common humanity.

Kohli’s comedic style, with its mix of dry delivery and sharp humour, keeps the audience engaged. He skilfully balances predictable jokes with deeper humour, ensuring that as the tension builds, a well-timed joke brings us back to the focus of his performance. As the show nears its end, Kohli’s honest reflections almost bring the audience to tears, only to lift them back into laughter with his perfect timing. As we left I heard one audience member say “I didn’t expect that” and that’s a great way to describe this show, heartfelt, funny and raw at times. The final section of the show is a rollercoaster that you’ll be discussing afterwards for sure.

Raul Britannia is an exceptional show that entertains while encouraging thought. Kohli uses comedy to challenge stereotypes and promote understanding and empathy. His performance leaves us considering what it truly means to be British, making it essential viewing for those seeking both laughter and insight.
