Re-entering the dating scene again after being in a 20-year marriage is always going to be tough, but when the reason your marriage broke down is because your husband left you for a pornstar, it makes the leap onto Tinder just that little bit harder.
This hilarious feminist forage into dating, sex and dildos is a refreshing take on divorce and relationships. Avoiding all clichés, Queening instead brings a new insight into a common narrative by giving it a sexed-up spin. This performer takes the audience through the journey from finding out her husband is having an affair with a girl from OnlyFans, right the way through to the healing process of moving on and rebuilding her life. While some parts do elicit genuine sympathy from the audience, it’s mostly a raunchy, laugh out loud one-woman show.
Danielle Scott is a natural born performer and comedian. Her over-exaggerated mannerisms and wonderful use of accents allows her to fully commandeer the stage. Switching between a variety of characters, the changes are seamless. She smoothly transitions between her grumpy Welsh ex-husband, a Liverpudlian sex-worker and an Essex hairdresser with ease, not to mention the multitude of men she impersonates during dreadful sounding Tinder dates. Scott makes her characters come alive and get the audience fully in her corner throughout her marriage breakdown.
Writer and director Tahys Rodriguez uses Scott’s natural comedic abilities to work wonders with the engaging, entertaining script. Both lead the audience through this monologue of sadness, sex and starting again. The flow is perfect, with just the right amount of time spent on each scene and interaction before moving on to the next amusing anecdote.
