Passion – Lion & Unicorn Theatre, London

Reviewer: Andrew Houghton

Writers: Nadav Burstein and Tom Dalrymple

Director: Frances Gillard

What appear to be two nooses hang onstage as the audience enter the black-box theatre space of Lion & Unicorn, where Passion is currently playing. Whilst the end result of the piece isn’t so cut and dry as viewers might expect, the atmosphere this image sets is apt for this emotionally heavy production.

The two-hander examines the complex relationship between best friends Jude and Josh, whose connection is a lot more than just platonic. Weighed down by a homophobic father and heteronormative religious views, Jude struggles to accept the truth about himself, yet is reluctant to let go of what Josh truly means to him.

Nadav Burstein and Tom Dalrymple, who play Jude and Joshua respectively, have incredible chemistry which is endlessly watchable. This is likely aided by their long-standing relationship as co-founders of Floating Shed, the theatre company presenting the production. The pair display strong trust and physical connection, both in the dynamic movement sequences and the moments of intimacy presented throughout.

As Jude, Burstein completely inhabits the role, compellingly conveying his internal conflict with thought-laden stares and erratic mood changes. The dexterity with which he navigates fleeting moments of vulnerability, amid struggling to keep his best friend at arm’s length, makes for a powerful performance.

Meanwhile, Josh is the antithesis of his ‘boyfriend’, fluid where Jude is stubborn, sensitive rather than stoic and, most importantly, unashamed of his identity. Dalrymple embodies this with a playful, charming attitude and a cheeky smile which is utterly endearing. Naturally, this makes his moments of hurt, which are skilfully executed, doubly difficult to witness.

Burstein and Dalrymple are also co-writers of Passion, which in itself is an achievement as the piece flows smoothly with one consistent voice. The script is intelligently constructed with appropriate levity to break up the heavy themes and the audience is gripped throughout. Direction from Frances Gillard ties the piece together with excellent use of the performance space, notably effective lighting and visual design, and particularly strong work on the moments of physical theatre woven into the storytelling.

Passion is a topical piece examining the controversial crossover of traditional religious views and contemporary queerness. An urgent production with outstanding performances at its core.
