Writers: The Bengsons
Director: Caitlin Sullivan
From the very beginning, Indie-folk duo The Bengsons create a warm, welcoming environment. Their commitment to accessibility is immediately evident, and the audience is encouraged to prioritise their comfort throughout the performance. The evening begins not with passive observation, but with an invitation to dance alongside them, sending a joyful signal that this show is a ritualistic celebration of life.
Abigail Bengson radiates a powerful yet gentle energy that dissolves the boundary between performer and audience. Her openness and charisma invite full participation, turning passive viewers into collaborators. Many of the songs involve audience involvement, and thanks to her masterful presence, everyone feels compelled to join in.
Shaun Bengson also brings a deeply affecting presence. In one of the show’s most striking moments, he explores his experience of hearing loss due to tinnitus. Through a carefully designed soundscape, the audience is immersed in his sonic world as he distorts consonance and frequency, allowing the audience to journey alongside him in a profound, sensory way.
Humour and honesty are woven throughout, particularly through their reflections on religion. Rather than preach, they use it as a lens to explore the human condition by curating a deeply healing and honest performance. Despite its minimal staging, Ohio feels rich, intimate, and artful. It’s a testament to the idea that true artistry doesn’t need spectacle to resonate.
Even a significant technical difficulty can’t disrupt the magic. The Bengsons handle the moment with grace, holding the space with care and reinforcing the connection between them and the audience. The Bengsons respond with compassion and warmth, ensuring the evening closes on a meaningful note.
Ohio is more than a musical; it’s a spiritual experience. Their reflections on religion, resilience, and parenthood make the show feel deeply personal yet universally relatable. It’s the kind of performance one may want to experience again and again. This deeply moving production is an offering that will stir the spirit and awaken one’s sense of humanity.
