They say write about what you feel and, once again Maureen Lennon brings us a new play riddled with emotion, highlighting the struggles that women face, this time, with protofeminist themes. Radically different and thought-provoking (subsumed here as feminism) the piece is a real triumph, and with international women’s day just around the corner it feels the right time for this story to be told.
In this searingly revolutionary play with music every actor shines. Bracingly relevant and beautifully shocking this celebration of being unashamedly different certainly pays off in what is an eloquent and significant play.
Mary and the Hyenas at Hull Truck Theatre is a bold and captivating production, brought to life by a compelling script and an electric central performance. Laura Elsworthy is nothing short of brilliant in the titular role, delivering an engaging portrayal of an anti-authoritarianist that is both emotionally raw and fiercely engaging. She commands the stage with intensity and nuance, drawing the audience into Mary’s world with every word and movement.
The production itself is visually striking, with inventive staging and a strong supporting cast who help create a charged atmosphere. The play’s energy never truly falters, thanks in large part to Elsworthy’s magnetic presence. Musically this show excels – a soundtrack of electro-restoration punk deftly created and imagined by Billy Nomates. There’s real artistry here matched with strong powerhouse vocals and tight harmonies from all of the show’s 6 players. A must-see for theatre lovers who aren’t afraid to enter the unknown, Mary and the Hyenas is a thrilling piece of theatre that lingers long after the final bow. Despite the clunky scene changes with the bed in the opening scenes and the odd mic crackle in places, particularly in the first half, this is a near-perfect production which deserves every success and accolade. Bravo.
