Leeds Millennium Square has done it again. A cultural hub of outstanding tribute artists set against a stunning backdrop right in the heart of the city. Legend: The Music of Bob Marley is a gem of a show and one that could quite possibly be described as uplifting and almost spiritual in its delivery.
Michael Phillips as Marley provides us with hit after hit from his back catalogue of reggae classics; He’s on fine form tonight and, rather than trying to mimic Bob Marley he sings and plays with subtle nods to his laid back musical style. The audience tonight, lovingly warmed up by the pre-show DJ to get this Rasta-party in to full swing, are literally ‘Jamming’ to the vibes. They are a friendly and appreciative crowd; this is jamming with a capital J. Even the lighting design sees the stage lit up with the colours of the Jamaican flag which proudly chase across the arena. Utterly joyous.

If one were to nit pick – this critic would have liked for this troupe of skilled performers to respond to the sounds of this packed audience as they cried out for “more”. It was the wrong choice not to include an encore which (almost) killed the vibe.
There were a few missed opportunities (including some of Marley’s biggest hits) that were excluded from tonight’s programme and the ending felt rushed and unfinished. That said, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, so much so one even scored himself a ticket to tomorrow’s The Magic of Motown.

Christopher – Great review and I agree with every word. I saw them in Harrogate in June and the energy, very cool but warmth from the band, interaction and the building rapport with the audience was on point and we had a very well received encore! This didn’t happen in Leeds.
The usual introductions and thanking each member of the band was started but then abruptly stopped as did the set. I imagine being on the road touring for so long is exhausting and sometimes it’s difficult to muster energy
Was a great evening and full grace given as can only think that something may have happened behind the scenes which we are not privy to!
Ps : Big respect to the DJ who deserves much credit for the amazing set and for keeping the audience energised and entertained!
