Multi Olivier award-winning musical & Juilet has the audience enthralled from the moment it begins at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. Ensemble cast members draw in the audience with playful, improvised, interactions. The hit musical features some of the most popular songs from the last few decades, many created by genius songwriter/producer Max Martin. These well-known tunes are given new life through the plot of & Juliet, written by David West Read, and the audience is literally on its feet, dancing along, by the end of the show. Luke Sheppard’s direction is intelligent and funny, creating so many memorable moments for the audience to enjoy.

The plot follows William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway who retell the story of star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, but with a huge twist. Juliet takes control of her destiny and moves on after Romeo’s tragic demise. What follows is a joyous tale of self-discovery and growth, celebrating individuality and authenticity.

There are so many standout performances. Gerardine Sacdalan plays Juliet outstandingly. Her portrayal of the famous ingenu is complete and all-encompassing. Her vocal, physical, and emotional deliveries are flawless. Juliet’s best friend, May, played by Jordan Broatch takes their own journey of self-exploration and acceptance. Broatch compassionately and sensitively portrays May, whose self-honesty is a microcosm of the overall diversity of the performance.

Shakespeare is played by Matt Cardle, who does a sterling job at bringing humour to the bard. His wife, Anne Hathaway, played by Harriet Caplan-Dean has stunning vocals and delivers a wonderfully comic performance. Their chemistry works extremely well for the duo.

Sandra Marvin and Ranj Singh play old flames, Angelique and Lance. Their storyline provides much hilarity, and their performances are heart-warmingly entertaining. Kyle Cox as Francois and Jack Danson as Romeo deliver stunning performances, both demonstrating their ability as extremely strong singers and charismatic performers.

The choreography by Jennifer Weber, is infectious, and expertly delivered, causing the audience to tap its toes throughout. The live musicians are flawless; the music is so perfect; it is easy to think that the tracks are pre-recorded. The symbiosis between the musicians and performers really gives this performance its unforgettable edge. The staging never ceases to surprise; set designer Soutra Gilmour’s dynamic use of flown in elements creates many “wow” moments.

This is an absolutely unmissable show and one of the best musicals to grace the stage at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in a long time.
