What links nostalgic theme parks and a malevolent alien puppet? Invasion! An Alien Musical is a hilarious musical journey through an attempted coup on humanity and a bonding of a family unit.
Johnny has his dream job as a retail worker at Lotus Land, a fiercely nostalgic theme park where Larry, a felt plant puppet, is the mascot. When a radical protestor attempts to sabotage the endless fun of the adventure land, he tries to vie for a promotion and stop the espionage in its tracks. But when Johnny discovers that an evil alien hive mind has not only infiltrated the park, but the minds of millions across the globe, Johnny and his stepdad go on a musical mission to save humans from themselves.
A standout vocal and acting performance from Nathan Galpin as Brian, Johnny’s well-meaning stepdad, gives structure to the convoluted plot. But Iona Rogan as a delightfully accurate power-hungry yet incompetent Prime Minister really steals the show and in all the roles she performs.
Impressive musical performances gave the show a solid foundation and songs from Lily Blundell are polished and well-written. Technical mishaps confuse the already confusing plot, but excellent use of video and a seamless musical performance from the sole accompaniment make up for it. The comedy is where this production shines, and all performers work smoothly together through what is clearly a well-rehearsed show.
However, any sincere moments are mostly cringe-inducing. It’s hard to take anything seriously in a show that promises an ‘Alien Musical’. Predominantly however the show does excel when it intends, and succeeds, to be funny and outrageous. Overall, Invasion! An Alien Musical is a hilarious romp of a musical that delivers on its vow to entertain.
