Music: Steps
Book: Shaun Kitchener
Director: Rachel Kavanaugh
“Here & Now,” the new jukebox musical featuring the hits of pop sensation Steps, may not boast the most robust storyline, but it more than makes up for it with sheer entertainment. Audiences are treated to a high-energy, neon-soaked spectacle packed with big laughs, standout performances, and just the right touch of sentimentality. It’s a vibrant celebration that promises a thoroughly enjoyable night out.
Set among the shelves of Better Best Bargains (and yes, this is just the beginning of the set and plot references), Caz (Rebbeca Lock) is holding her breath for some life-changing news. But as any seasoned musical theatre fan knows, things rarely unfold as expected. With her loyal friends Vel (Jacqui Dubois), Neeta(Rosie Singha) and Robbie (Blake Patrick Anderson) by her side, she vows to turn this summer into their very own “Summer of Love.” Will Caz’s dreams finally take flight? Can her friends discover romance between the cleaning supplies and canned goods in aisles 5, 6, 7 or 8? And what exactly is happening to Better Best Bargains that no store manager ever saw coming? ‘What will the Future Hold’?
Director Rachel Kavanaugh ensures the show is pacey and pulls out as many laughs from Shaun Kitchener’s script as possible. Choreographer Matt Cole includes knowing nods to many of Steps’ much performed choreography while still adding his own original blemishes which allows plenty of familiarity but also providing plenty of exciting opportunities for a strong ensemble to get their teeth into.
Set designer Tom Rogers, costume designer Gabriella Slade, and lighting designer Howard Hudson keep the energy soaring with a vibrant palette of pink and blue neon that lights up every corner of the production. Their creative choices bring a sense of fun and flair that never feels tired, constantly offering fresh visual surprises that enhance the show’s dynamic atmosphere.
Lock shines as Caz, the 49-year-old cashier, bringing just the right mix of humour and heart to the role while making the most of every chance to showcase their impressive vocals. Singha is equally delightful as Neeta, the art student shelf-stacker, offering a performance full of charm and energy. Anderson delivers a heartfelt storyline alongside Drag Race star River Medway, who surprises with a bold and engaging turn as the flamboyant Jem.
The supporting cast adds plenty of colour: Finty Williams brings great comedic timing to the unpredictable supermarket manager Patricia, while Jacquai Dubois offers a grounded counterbalance as Vel, the more thoughtful and steady presence in the chaos.
Thankfully ‘Here and Now’ is no ‘Tragedy’ and provides a show that has the audience ‘Stomp’ing and cheering on their feet by the time the curtain falls. If you don’t grab your ticket for the show at a venue near you ‘You’ll Be Sorry’ and probably find yourself a ‘Deeper Shade of Blue’.
