Book, Music and Lyrics: Lin-Manuel Miranda
Director: Thomas Kail
The phenomenon that is Hamilton has finally arrived in Norwich, and it’s every bit as stunning as its reputation suggests. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genre-defying musical, blending hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes, makes the Revolution feel immediate and alive. This touring production not only honours the original but proves its power can travel far beyond Broadway and the West End.
At its heart, Hamilton is the story of America then, told by America now, but what makes this production special is how fully its cast seize that challenge. The company’s energy never dips, and every single detail is sharply delivered.
Among the ensemble of standout talent, three performances demanded particular attention. Shak Mancel James, doubling as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, brings irresistible vitality to both roles. His playful presence lights up the stage, and he balances it so well with a poignancy and moving performance in the second act.
Chasity Crisp’s Angelica Schuyler is another highlight. Her rendition of Satisfied is a masterclass in both technical precision and emotional drive. Crisp navigates the song’s rapid-fire verses and aching undercurrent with such control that it becomes one of the evening’s defining moments.
But it is Billy Nevers as Aaron Burr who just about steals the entire show. His vocals in Wait for It left the audience hushed, his performance carrying a weight and vulnerability that gave the number a beautiful depth. By the time he leads The Room Where It Happens, Nevers commands the stage with such authority that the story briefly feels as though it belongs entirely to him. His Burr is charismatic, conflicted, and unforgettable.
Keen choreography (Michael Mindlin and Carrie-Anne Ingrouille) keeps every moment in motion, while the rotating stage ensures scenes slip seamlessly into one another, giving the production its trademark cinematic flow. The design, familiar to anyone who has followed the show, still feels striking in person, with every light cue sharp, every tableau carefully judged.
This Hamilton is nothing short of a triumph. Sharp, emotionally resonant, and filled with exceptional performances, it leaves no doubt as to why this musical has become a cultural landmark. Norwich has rarely seen a production this assured, this alive, and this unforgettable. You must make sure you’re in the room where it happens.
