Out of the Archive, in association with Sheffield Theatres, announce the cast for the world premiere of Gwenda’s Garage, the next new British musical which comes to Sheffield’s Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse and Southwark Playhouse Borough.
Starring as the three pioneering women mechanics who founds Gwenda’s Garage are Nancy Brabin-Platt as Bev, Sia Kiwa as Terry and Eva Scott as Carol. They are joined by Lucy MacKay who takes on the role of ally Feona. All other roles will be played Liz Kitchen, who also features as the show’s drummer and associate musical director.
With a script by Nicky Hallett, music by Val Regan and lyrics by Regan in association with Hallett, this rousing new musical is based on the true story of the real Gwenda’s Garage, founded in 1985 in Sheffield and named after Gwenda Stewart, a record-breaking racing driver in the early 20th century. The garage became a hub for women’s education and activism alongside the day-to-day of car repairs against the backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain, the fight against Section 28 and the fight for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights.
Gwenda’s Garage is a joyful, exuberant and queer call to arms, fired by fun, feminism and friendship, and above all an affirming belief in the power of collective action.
The show runs at the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse in Sheffield from 15 to 25 October, before revving into London’s Southwark Playhouse Borough from 30 October to 29th November. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased the relevant theatre’s box offices.
