An expectant full house greets this world premiere of a Scottish comedy drama and they’re not disappointed. The show has Elaine C. Smith centre stage in a title role that’s reputedly modelled on playwright Eilidh Loan’s grandmother. The much-loved actor plays it perfectly and her comic timing is a wonder to behold.
The action focuses on Cathy’s distinctly feisty response to her husband’s death. Her character is far from unique; she’s recognisable as a west coast everywoman of a certain age. Much of the laughter comes from her no-nonsense approach to life and her liberal use of the f-word. So subtlety and innovation are not the watchwords here: this production is all about comforting familiarity, laughter through grief, and bags of sentimentality. And of course there’s a place in theatre for all of that.
Three generations of the family are doing their best to come to terms with the loss of Tommy, a much-loved dad, grandad and peacemaker between Cathy and her daughter Flo (Michelle Gallagher). Tensions are stoked from the outset when, after Tommy’s funeral, Flo procures a Chinese takeaway from the wrong establishment – one that has caused Cathy some bodily discomfort in the past.
At the same time as they’re mourning the loss of Tommy, the family are all preparing for a new arrival, but Amy (Chloe Hodgson) is due to give birth out of wedlock, much to Cathy’s chagrin. Completing the likeable cast are Lizzie (Sally Reid), manager of the charity shop where Amy works, and Colin (Alan Orr) the supportive husband of Flo who is also kind and helpful to Cathy, despite being considered to be on the wrong side of the Celtic-Rangers divide.
Altogether this is a pleasant enough afternoon entertainment, if a rather pedestrian one. There are few surprises but plenty of laughs, with a strong cast, great production values and Elaine C. Smith as the shining light. Few tickets remain, so if this is your thing you’ll need to be quick.
