Kevin Quantum’s Unbelievable Magic for Non-Believers is one of the really popular magic shows at the Fringe – and quite rightly so. Scottish magician-scientist Quantum has carved out a niche whereby classic stage magic meets scientific spectacle, and the result is a slick, smart and highly entertaining hour that leaves audiences gasping, laughing, and, ultimately, believing.
Right from the start, the audience is drawn into the theme of belief versus scepticism by choosing either a ‘believer’ or ‘non-believer’ card in the queue. In this performance, the room leaned 60% towards scepticism – but Quantum’s charm, charisma and undeniable skill ensured that balance shifted by the show’s end. His stage presence is magnetic, and his storytelling keeps the audience fully engaged throughout.
The show blends traditional illusions with the drama of science, memorably through the use of a Tesla coil that buzzes and crackles to life between routines. It’s a striking theatrical device that adds atmosphere and a sense of danger, particularly when Quantum channels electricity through himself to light up a fluorescent tube. While the coil itself is underused compared to its dramatic potential, its presence underscores Quantum’s determination to place science on equal footing with magic.
Audience participation is at the heart of the show and handled inclusively and with flair. At one point, the entire audience performed a trick simultaneously, successfully matching pairs – a moment that created a shared sense of wonder. Reactions throughout were genuine: gasps, laughter and the repeated phrase, “how did he do that?” filled the room. A standout highlight saw an audience member sit with her eyes closed while Quantum, using only a pointer on a projected video image, convinced her she was being physically touched on her head, shoulder and elbow. It was both baffling and theatrical – a perfect example of Quantum’s skill at blending illusion with psychological suggestion.
The finale deserves special mention. Without giving away spoilers, Quantum tied together threads from the entire performance, delivering a clever and heartfelt conclusion that transformed even the most sceptical into believers. It was, quite simply, the icing on the cake.
Overall, Unbelievable Magic for Non-Believers is charismatic, clever and consistently engaging. Quantum’s seamless blend of science and sorcery, combined with his natural stage presence and inventive audience interaction, make this a must-see Fringe highlight. A little more could be drawn from the Tesla coil, but that’s a minor quibble in what is otherwise an exceptional show.
Runs until 24th August 2025.
