ED FRINGE: Hotel Paradiso – Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows, Edinburgh

Reviewer: Skylar Mabry

Director: Lost in Translation Circus

Lost in Translation Circus are an international company with years of experience on the circuit. Based out of Norfolk, Co-Directors Annabel Carberry and Massimiliano Rossetti work with a small team of performers, ensuring their ensemble is tightly knit for each show. Hotel Paradiso is no exception.

The gorgeous cabaret-tent style venue is designed to be the foyer of the titular Hotel Paradiso and the audience are greeted by the concierge, maid, and bell hop. There are hilarious antics from the start, and each performer shows their adept capability – acrobatics, object manipulation, physical comedy, this cast can do it all.

A long time ago, this hotel was owned by a lovely couple, who kept the place lively. When they were suddenly killed, their daughter was left in charge. Now the Madame, with her head in the clouds, and a rich love interest who would never meet her in person, must keep the hotel on its feet.

Although she is kind and loved by the staff, the hotel loses business. A faithful narrator, the concierge starts off the story with a skilful Cyr Wheel routine. Much time passes, until one day, a dastardly duo arrives at the hotel. The Banker is here to claim the hotel unless it can be shown to be financially viable. Can this foolish foursome save their beloved hotel?

The acts are well integrated into the story, and as time goes on, they become more and more incredible. The cast work together efficiently and continue to surprise and delight the audience all the way through. Particularly enjoyable is the maid’s aerial hoop performance while stranded on the chandelier.

A daring finale sets all to rights: each character with their own satisfactory ending, and all the loose ends tied up. Lost in Translation Circus have created a heart-warming, adventurous, and enjoyable show, available for tours across the UK and internationally. With extraordinary acts, outrageous characters, and an original score by Peter Reynolds, Hotel Paradiso is a bunch of high-flying fun for the whole family.

Runs at Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows – The Beauty until 27 August 2022
