Illusionist and mentalist Derren Brown returns with a new show that builds to an impressive finale.
Before the show, Brown and his team ask that none of the tricks, events, or mystifying moments is repeated outside the theatre to enhance the mystery. Without giving too much away, there is plenty for old and new fans of Brown to get into in this new tour, with the hallmarks of his humour, tricks and mind-bending routines on display.
There is a good blend of audience participation and interaction, as well as Brown’s leading. The showmanship is equally on display when Brown comes into the audience, and seeing the illusionist’s work up close is certainly such a sight to behold that even the most cynical of punters would think twice before questioning the validity of what is happening on stage and around the auditorium.
In addition, Brown’s high-tech staging creates an immersive and unsettling sequence in the second half, the stronger of the two, where again an unsuspecting member of the audience becomes the target of an extended routine. Where the first half meanders with some tricks but little awe, it is in the second half, where everything comes together, that the production really flies.
There is a neat touch of melodrama too, with large props and supposedly dangerous routines meaning some audience members are asked to leave, or at least not take part, in a deft stylistic choice to intensify the illusion further.
While it does take a little while for anything truly impressive to happen, it is the show’s triumphant ending that is worth sticking with Brown and his show for. The illusionist continues to be at the top of his game, with more than one moment causing audiences to question just how he does it.
Runs until 11 April 2026 then continues tour.
