Choreographer: Philippe Lafeuille
TUTU, the award-winning show from Chicos Mambo, visits the Peacock Theatre in London this week as part of its 10th Anniversary Tour. Lovingly choreographed by artistic director Philippe Lafeuille, this family-friendly production is a beautiful display of creativity and theatrical flair.
This playful and comedic dance show pays homage to the often over-serious world of dance while shattering stereotypes and lovingly mocking the idea that tutus should only be worn by women. The production parodies over 40 characters, from classical ballet through to contemporary movement, but understanding these references is merely the cherry on top – this production is accessible to all.
TUTU is a joyful experience to behold, blending mesmerising dance skills with inventive parody. Admittedly, the comedy aspect ebbs and flows throughout, sometimes making way for more disciplined technical skill; yet, even during sections which aren’t as laugh-out-loud funny, you will struggle to wipe the amazed grin from your face.
The company of six tutu-clad men works together seamlessly and frequently splits off into pairs or solo routines to spotlight individual talent. Audiences would expect their technique to be on-pointe, yet it is their deliberate mistakes which perhaps impress even more. The company members frequently throw themselves rag-doll style around the stage in moments of delightful slapstick humour, and the skill required to do so safely is unfathomable.
TUTU uses every production element at its disposal to create an all-around feast for the senses. Corinne Petitpierre and Anne Tesson’s tule-heavy costume design is simply spectacular, amplifying the humour of the show while the fabric intelligently complements the already captivating choreography. Lighting design by Dominique Mabileau and Guillaume Tesson is used thoughtfully and with great artistic vision to isolate and spotlight specific body parts and movement sequences. Of course, the production would appear rather unhinged without its brilliant sound design by Antisten, which blends recognisable melodies with entertaining spoken word recordings.
Chicos Mambo are a proudly unique company who have mastered the craft of being playful yet professional, all while championing a powerful message of defying the norm. TUTU artfully blends style, form and design to create a true theatrical marvel.
Runs until 5 October 2024
