Catherine Bohart: Again, With Feelings – Soho Theatre, London

Reviewer: Andrew Houghton

Catherine Bohart returns to the Soho Theatre stage this week to kick off her new tour Again, With Feelings, a rapid-fire display of her acclaimed energetic wit.

These London dates mark the first leg of an 80-date commitment which will see Bohart through most of 2024. She drily notes that the energy will only go down from here, though it is hard to imagine an instance in which Bohart’s deft delivery could drag. She reels off anecdotes with speed but also precision; a master of her style.

Again, With Feelings is Bohart’s account of life at 35, which is not at all what she had envisioned. A large proportion of the material stems from the comedian’s serial girlfriends and her current age-gap relationship. This includes revisiting house-share arrangements through a new lens andgetting her mother’s hopes up with yet another prospective wife. As a self-proclaimed fast-talking chronic oversharer, Bohart of course also goes on to divulge stories about the sperm bank, surprise pregnancies, and rimming.

Bohart shows real strength and the mark of a seasoned professional in her quick-witted audience interactions. Whatever material she is presented with, her flow never falters and she retorts with great instinct. Unanticipated interruptions can’t even break her stride and audience contributions are scooped up into her whirlwind of storytelling without a second thought.

When the concept of love languages arises, Bohart notes that none of the existing five – gifts, quality time, physical touch, etc. – quite suit her. Instead, she introduces a sixthelement which really gets her going: gossip. It is fitting, then, that Bohart’s entire show feels like an overdue catch-up with a friend. Her over-zealous desire to share juicy details with the audience does occasionally trip up her delivery, yet her quick-fire style promises that any weakened punchlines are often tailgated with a laugh-out-loud hit.

Again, With Feelings feels universal without being generic and Bohart’s sharp but excitable persona makes for a very endearing hour of entertainment.

Runs until 23 March 2024 and continues to tour
