BRIGHTON FRINGE: Selena Mersey: Madonna/Whore (WIP) – Rotunda Theatre (Squeak)

Sigmund Freud’s Maddona-Whore complex is the unlikely topic of Selena Mersey’s hit comedy show which delights a sold out audience at the Rotunda Theatre (Squeak)

Freud first coined the term which states that men see women as either the Madonna – wholly virtuous, pure and chaste, or the whore – promiscuous, seductive and degraded. In this funny hour long show Mersey is having none of this and asserts that women can be anything from one end of the spectrum to the other, as they please, or both at once, if it suits them.

Mersey explores her sexuality with the audience, on her terms, in an honest and fabulously silly way.  Self assured on stage, and revelling in the odd mistake here and there, Mersey quickly endears herself to the crowd, the performance being a good mix of song, comedy striptease, clowning and a slice of audience participation.

As the night goes on we see Mersey dusting “dirty” audience members in a maids outfit, a sprinkling of comedy songs, including laugh out loud funny ditties about wanting to sleep with all her friends, as well as a tune from Freud himself (Mersey dressed in a ridiculous beard and glasses) and a smattering of education as she discusses and dismantles the Freudian theory.

While the venue (a blue tent which shouts “Acid Rave” rather than theatre space) is a little disorientating, Mersey is a fabulous host for an evening of comedy fun. There are impish and ostentatious shades of an English Margarita Pracatan peeping through in Selena’s performance; the difference being that Mersey can actually sing and sing very well.  Above all it’s Mersey’s cheekiness and warmth that shines as she performs.

Madonna/Whore is an engaging show to watch and with a few more shows under her belt will be a sure fire winner with Fringe audiences around the UK.
