Story: Joe Brumm
Music: Joff Bush
Bluey’s Big Play is a joyful theatrical adaptation of the Emmy® award-winning children’s television series, masterfully bringing the beloved Heeler family from screen to stage with charm, colour and abundant laughter. Anchored by an original story from creator Joe Brumm, the production centres on a relatable and endearing premise: Dad (Bandit) seeks a peaceful Sunday afternoon nap, yet Bluey and Bingo have other plans. What ensues is a lively and inventive sequence of games aimed at coaxing him off the bean bag, much to the delight of audiences young and old.
The production adeptly captures the warmth and humour that have cemented the series’ popularity. Familiar characters including Bluey, Bingo, Mum (Chilli), Dad (Bandit), and Pat (“Lucky’s Dad”) are all present, with interactions that remain authentic to the spirit of the show. At its core, the narrative celebrates imaginative play alongside gentle parenting philosophies, offering moments of lighthearted humour intertwined with meaningful lessons that resonate across generations.
A particularly impressive aspect of Bluey’s Big Play is its skilful puppetry. The characters are brought vividly to life through large, highly expressive puppets operated with remarkable precision by an energetic stage team. This craftsmanship imbues each character with vibrant personality and draws audiences seamlessly into Bluey’s enchanting world.
From a technical standpoint, the show is polished and well-executed. Scene transitions are smooth and efficient, maintaining a steady pace that holds younger viewers’ attention throughout. However, one minor drawback concerns sound levels; at times dialogue can be somewhat difficult to discern over audience chatter during key moments – a factor which may momentarily detract from immersion.
The concluding segment features an engaging game of “keepy uppy” inviting audience participation – a clear highlight for many children in attendance. Nonetheless, this section extends slightly longer than necessary and inadvertently excludes those seated beneath balconies or in the circle/dress circle who cannot fully partake in the activity. This limitation introduces a small but notable sense of disappointment for some attendees.
Merchandise available at performances is plentiful and appealing though prices tend towards the higher side. Despite these minor imperfections, Bluey’s Big Play stands as an engaging and heartwarming theatrical experience that successfully translates this cherished family favourite from screen to stage with authenticity and joy.
Runs until Sunday 22nd March, before continuing on tour
