A collision of the worlds of ballet and hip-hop, Beats on Pointe is bursting with high-energy, fun dance numbers and provides light-hearted fun for those of all ages.
You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d know exactly what to expect based on the show’s name and the opening of a ballet vs hip hop dance battle, but the routines feature some surprising additions of head spinning, back flips, moonwalking in pointe shoes and comedic skits.
Paired with a modern pop and contemporary sing-along soundtrack (Lorde’s Royals, Beyonce’s Single Ladies and Rhianna’s We Found Love), the performers certainly aren’t lacking in enthusiasm and much of the audience can’t help but bop, clap, cheer and sing along.
Whilst there may be some comedic elements that fall slightly short, you’ve got to give them credit where credits due for diversifying out of their trained skillsets, and it’s easy to tell that from the energy coming off the stage that the dancers very clearly have an enormous passion for their craft and are having just as much fun as those of us in the audience.
It’s a warm, energetic, and entertaining hour that will leave you smiling, and if that’s what you’re looking for, then this one’s for you.
