Amos Gill: The Pursuit of Happy(ish) – Edinburgh Fringe 2023, Gilded Balloon Teviot

Reviewer: Harriet Chappell

Amos Gill has been touted as one of Australia’s “best and funniest stand-up comedians,” and whilst it may be his first foray into the Edinburgh Fringe scene, if the reactions in the audience are anything to go by, he certainly delivers.

Throughout the hour, nothing is off limits.

From his own mother and husband number three, the Scots independence, to the Royal Family and every American he’s ever had the pleasure to meet (which is quite a few seeing as this is where he now calls home), he pushes the boundaries, addressing contentious subjects for which he has some very fiery ideas on how to fix – albeit they may not be the most serious or practical solutions, particularly when it comes to child adoption rates.

His beloved Croatian grandmother and grandfather and their approach to love as they age feature heavily as the butt of many of his quips, but he speaks with a particular fondness and concludes with a very optimistic view on love.

So sure, at times he may be a bit crude, and you may not agree with everything he says, he has a confident charm and fearlessness, and he ultimately delivers a show that is raw and unapologetically honest.

The premise of the show is the pursuit of happiness, and when Amos asks the question “are we all truly happy?,” the answer at the end of the hour is a yes.
