Choreographer: Alice Ripoll and Dance Company Cia Suave
Upon entering the auditorium, you are immediately greeted by a small private party unfolding in the top left corner. This lively gathering with the beat of drums and enthusiastic dancing sets the tone for the jubilant celebration that is about to unfold. The true exuberance of the occasion becomes evident as a cake is brought out to mark the beginning of the performance.
The centrepiece of the spectacle is the visually striking symbol which is the balloon. This is immediately seen in the set design which consists of enormous silvery black balloons which hover above the stage. As the performance unfolds, each of these balloons is burst, showering the performers in a cascade of confetti. Each burst injects new energy and curiosity onto the stage. These balloons are a fitting symbol, blending elements of innocence, eerie allure, and explosive excitement.
Alice Ripoll’s choreography not only showcases a rich diversity of dance styles but also demonstrates her skilful ability to seamlessly fuse these different genres. The performance exudes an expansive quality, not only in its full use of the stage but also in its ability to fluidly integrate various physical languages, crafting a unique form of expression through this patchwork of techniques. Throughout the show, duets, solos, and group performances coexist harmoniously, creating a bizarre yet captivating combination that transitions seamlessly between these different formations. The group dance sequences, in particular, steal the spotlight, capturing the exhilarating essence that the performance embodies.
The performers sustain an impressive vitality throughout, and the synergy among them is enchanting to watch. Their infectious delight, remarkable elasticity, impeccable rhythm, and captivating expressions are truly impressive.
Musically, the performance weaves through various Brazilian styles, including the youthful funk genre. However, the sounds emitted by the dancers add depth and texture to the score, contributing to the performance’s distinctive and layered atmosphere.
Although the marketing copy suggests a political context related to the transition from Bolsonaro to Lula, this interpretation may not resonate as strongly in a London context. Nevertheless, there is a universal theme of longing for rebirth that permeates the performance.
The piece is sophisticated in its own authenticity as it constructs its own immersive world through the various elements used. The chaos of this explosive performance creates a space for the celebration that we all yearn to be reminded of.
