The year was 1991, the courtroom drama was real, and the question was deceptively simple: are Jaffa Cakes cakes or biscuits? Gigglemug’s Jaffa Cake the Musical takes that wonderfully absurd case and turns it into a riotous, high-energy comedy that proves VAT law can, in fact, be deliciously entertaining.
We enter a bare black box space, greeted only by Alex Prescot at the keyboard, decked out in an orange tie as bright as the confection itself. He soon reveals himself as both the presiding judge and the musical engine, setting the tone for a performance that’s as inventive as it is playful. The four strong ensemble (Sam Cochrane as Kevin, Harry Miller as Jake, Sabrina Messer as Katherine, and Katie Pritchard as the Tax Man and others) spring into action with songs, satire and sharp character work, embodying barristers, tax officials and more besides, all while singing, dancing, and playing instruments with ease.
The script and lyrics draw knowingly on the language of the courtroom while gleefully referencing musical theatre favourites. From Hamilton to Fame, Little Shop of Horrors to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fiddler on the Roof, the show sends up the genre with cheeky pastiche numbers that are as funny as they are catchy. Messer’s Katherine, a barrister who takes centre stage in a full song-and-dance routine, is a particular highlight, while the ensemble’s ability to switch roles seamlessly keeps the energy high and the comedy fresh.
Ali James’s direction ensures the production never loses pace, with visual gags and snappy choreography. The very talented bassist and drummer also double as a kind of Greek chorus, shifting musical genres with ease and filling the stage with sound and movement that belie the intimate staging.
It’s not just clever—it’s generous. The show rounds off by inviting audiences to support the Edinburgh Food Project with a small donation in exchange for a Jaffa Cake, leaving us with something sweet both metaphorically and literally.
With its whip-smart writing, infectious energy, and multi-skilled cast, Jaffa Cake the Musical is a treat of a show—equal parts comedy, parody, and legal history lesson. As satisfying as the snack it celebrates, it’s an irresistible Fringe highlight.
Runs until 25th August 2025.
