Jack Holden has absolutely bested himself, which is no small feat following his hugely popular solo show Cruise, which re-opened London’s West End following lockdown. In KENREX, Holden once again performs with captivating flair and adrenaline, though this time taking on an entirely different beast.
KENREX is one of the most fascinating real-life stories you never knew. Ken Rex McElroy terrorised his local community for over a decade, but was never convicted of any crimes thanks to a very slippery, very effective defence lawyer. When McElroy’s violent tendencies reach new heights, a prosecutor from out of town joins the fight, which could be exactly what the people of Skidmore, Missouri, need. This enthralling tale of justice vs. revenge is a fantastic examination of human nature, and the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Fans of Cruise will recognise Holden’s signature style running through the veins of this production. His tenacious ability to multi-role features heavily as he embodies countless personalities from the community victimised by Kenrex, as well as becoming the fearsome bully himself. Holden is a masterful performer who switches roles with clarity and ease, demonstrating various vocal shifts and changes in posture to distinguish identity. Particularly effective is his strong sense of control when depicting characters in extended back-and-forth conversation. Instead of rushing, as many performers tend to in this situation, Holden takes the time to fully transition before responding in-character; but never drops the ball or loses momentum in doing so.
Once again, Holden works with John Patrick Elliott to amplify his world-building with impressive live music and audio design. The ever-present soundscape ranges from complementary to oppressive, contributing to an absolutely thrilling atmosphere within the venue. This inescapable tension perfectly mimics the adrenaline rush of a great true-crime documentary.
The overall execution of KENREX is simply astounding, inspiring a consistent sense of awe due to the immense level of detail and precision. Every aspect of this production is intelligently conceived, with clear intention shining through every choice, yet nothing about it feels laboured. Holden glides through his perfectly practiced routine like clockwork, jumping between time and place without a trace of effort. He converses seamlessly with pre-recorded sound, constantly rearranges the stage and juggles half a dozen microphones without ever missing a beat.
Narratively rich and skilfully executed, KENREX is a true work of art. Not only has Holden obliterated any chance of being considered a one-hit wonder, this incredible follow-up demonstrates that he is only just hitting his stride.
